European Treetag Campaign 2026

Now let’s highlight the benefits of trees—together!

Trees are invaluable to our cities and our future. They provide shade on hot days, help manage rainwater, enhance biodiversity, and produce oxygen. That is why it is important for more people to understand their value and significance to our environment.

To raise awareness about the role of trees, 12 organizations from 9 European countries organized a joint TreeTag campaign in September 2024. Now we want to do it again!

On a single day in 2024, tree signs were hung on trees across Europe, providing information about each individual tree: How tall is it? What species is it? What benefits does it provide? Each tree was featured on social media and on a shared website. In addition, press releases were issued about the tagged trees. The campaign generated significant attention across Europe regarding the important role of trees.

The next campaign will take place in September 2026, and we want your municipality or property owner to participate!

The Benefits of Urban Trees

In our cities and urban areas, trees are a vital part of the environment and play an important role in the health and well-being of those who live there. While their aesthetic value is clear, the ecosystem services they provide are both multifaceted and central to our quality of life. From improving air quality to enhancing mental well-being, urban trees are indispensable for creating sustainable, healthy, and vibrant cities.

By understanding and appreciating the many benefits of urban trees, we can better work to preserve them and integrate them into urban planning and management, thereby ensuring their space, protection, and long-term development.

IMPROVED AIR QUALITY

Urban trees act as natural air filters. Through photosynthesis, they absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) and release oxygen (O₂), while storing carbon in their tissues as they grow. Trees also remove particulate matter (PM) and other air pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and ozone (O₃), which are known to cause serious respiratory problems. Studies show that urban trees can reduce air pollution levels by up to 60%, contributing to cleaner and healthier air for all of us.

WATER MANAGEMENT

Urban trees contribute to effective water management by capturing rainwater, reducing runoff, and increasing the proportion of permeable surfaces. Tree roots improve soil structure, increase infiltration, reduce erosion, and enhance the soil’s water-retention capacity. They also help filter and restore groundwater levels. By slowing water flow, trees reduce the risk of flooding and help protect urban waterways. They also play an important role in filtering pollutants out of rainwater, thereby maintaining good water quality.

CLIMATE CONTROL

Trees play a crucial role in regulating the urban environment by influencing solar radiation, wind speed, temperature, humidity, and heat radiation from paved surfaces. They provide shade that lowers the temperature beneath their canopy and reduces the urban heat island effect that often occurs in cities. This effect is caused by concrete and asphalt absorbing and emitting heat, which can significantly raise temperatures. A single mature tree can transpire up to 450 liters of water on a hot day, which cools the air. Areas with many large, mature trees can therefore be several degrees cooler, reducing the need for air conditioning and lowering energy costs.

BIODIVERSITY AND HABITATS

Every urban tree is a small universe of biodiversity. Trees provide habitats for many different birds, insects, and small mammals. This biodiversity is important for ecological balance and contributes to a healthy urban ecosystem. Species-rich urban environments also increase the ecosystem’s resilience to environmental changes and other stressors.

PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL BENEFITS

The presence of trees in urban environments is linked to many psychological and social benefits. Green spaces have been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and promote mental health. They offer a respite from the noise of the city and provide space for social interaction, relaxation, and recreation. Studies show that people who live in areas with more greenery report higher levels of well-being and lower levels of anxiety and depression.

ECONOMIC VALUE

The economic benefits of urban trees are significant. Properties with trees and green spaces often have a higher value. Businesses on tree-lined streets attract more customers, and employees who work in greener environments report higher job satisfaction and productivity. In addition, cities save millions of kronor in infrastructure and maintenance costs thanks to the ecosystem services that trees provide, such as air and water purification, climate regulation, and flood protection.

Partners

This campaign raises awareness about the importance of trees and is a collaboration between 14 different organizations from 11 European countries.
