NORDIC GATHERING ON URBAN GREENERY

You’re Invited – A Nordic Gathering on Urban Greenery

Join us for an inspiring and free full-day workshop in Helsinki!

Stångby Plantskola (Sweden), The tree office (Sweden), and Huutokoski (Finland) warmly welcome you to a unique opportunity to explore the future of urban trees, climate adaptation, and plant selection.

Together with fellow professionals and enthusiasts from across the Nordic region, we’ll share knowledge, spark new ideas, and grow stronger networks. One of the day’s highlights will be a presentation by Finnish-Swedish professor Johanna Witzell, who brings insights into combating Dutch elm disease and other tree pathogens.

More detailed program are coming soon.

Let’s shape greener cities together!

The tree office – Gustav Nässlander

Climate adaptation with, and FOR, trees
Gustav will present new ways of utilising, and measuring, trees for urban climate adaptation in the Nordic climate. While trees play a significant role in mitigating the effects of a warmer climate, they are also threatened by warmer and dryer seasons.

Therefore, The Tree Office have conducted climate forecasts for more than 60 different tree species, common to the Nordics, to assess which species will suffer, and which will thrive in the climate of the year 2100. Gustav will talk about these climate forecasts, along with the 3+30+300-rule, canopy cover analysis and heat stress simulation.

Stångby Plantskola – Erik Jönsson

Nordic Nurseries in Transition: Trends and Tensions
Climate change is redefining the role of urban trees, from ornament to technical infrastructure. As expectations grow, so do the complexities – ranging from shifting species suitability to biosecurity risks.

This presentation examines the strategic direction of a major Nordic tree nursery as it works to develop a future-proof assortment and sustainable trade practices. Key focus areas include emerging market needs, the tension between native and exotic species, and the nursery’s role as a potential gateway for invasive pests and pathogens.

Linnaeus University – Johanna Witzell

New approaches for safeguarding urban treescape against Dutch Elm Disease and other diseases and pests
Dutch Elm Disease, together with a fast-growing roster of new invasive tree diseases and pests threaten urban trees. This talk unpacks the next wave of tools and measures against these threats, including molecular methods to identify and control tree pathogens and insects, spectral and data-driven monitoring methods, and potential of using beneficial microbes to support tree health, presenting a roadmap to cultivate healthier, more resilient urban treescapes.
